Of all the operations on this site, this is the one where travelling alone is the hardest to manage, and the reason has nothing to do with the surgery.
You cannot lift, reach upward or carry for weeks. That covers your suitcase, the overhead locker, your hotel kettle and the shopping — every ordinary task a solo traveller does without thinking.
Three timescales, not one

Most travellers plan against the first clock alone. The second is the one that decides whether the trip home is manageable, and it is longer.
Settle these before booking anything
- Where does the operation take place, and do I stay overnight?
- Are drains planned, and when would they come out?
- How long should I stay, for the plan you are proposing?
- Is imaging needed beforehand, and can I arrange it at home?
- Is removed tissue examined, and how does the result reach me?
- Can my return flight be changed, and at what cost?
Items four and five are the two that only matter to travelling patients, and the two nobody thinks to raise until it is too late to arrange them conveniently.
Bring someone, or arrange the equivalent
This is a firmer recommendation for this operation than for anything else covered on this site.
You will need someone to take you back after a general anaesthetic, and someone nearby on the first day when reaching for a glass of water is genuinely difficult.
If you are travelling alone, say so early. Accommodation with room service, a hotel that will carry bags, and airline assistance booked in advance together substitute for a companion reasonably well.
What none of them substitute for is someone to notice that you look unwell, which is worth weighing honestly before you decide to travel by yourself.
Apply your own country’s standards
Consumer protection does not travel with you. The standard you would apply at home does, and carrying it costs nothing.
The European Union of Medical Specialists publishes work on standards of specialist medical practice and training, which is a useful reference for what specialist qualification is supposed to mean anywhere.
Judged that way, a practice that publishes verifiable registration, insists you meet the operating surgeon, names a qualified anaesthetist and describes limits as readily as possibilities is behaving as you would expect at home.

What to pack that you would not otherwise
- Front-fastening tops, more than you think, since nothing goes over your head.
- Two support garments, so one can be washed in a humid climate.
- A long-handled sponge, which solves washing better than anything else.
- A written medication list, including anything taken for years.
- Your last imaging report, if you have had breast screening.
- Photographs of yourself beforehand, standing, front and side.
The last costs nothing and settles more later questions than anything else, particularly about which side was always larger.
Arrange imaging at home, not here
This is the item most likely to disrupt a carefully booked trip, and it is entirely avoidable with one question asked early.
Depending on your age, history and what is found on examination, imaging may be requested before surgery is planned. Discovering that after you land can cost days you did not budget.
Ask at the remote consultation whether it is likely in your case, and if so arrange it at home where you know the system and speak the language.
Bring the report and the images themselves rather than a summary, since a surgeon will want to see them rather than read about them.
Insurance, and what it usually excludes
Many travel and health policies exclude anything arising from elective treatment overseas, which puts a complication or an advised delay on your account rather than the insurer’s.
Read the wording before you travel, and ask specifically about cover for a delayed return on medical advice.
Ask your own doctor at home, before leaving, whether they would review a wound or manage an infection after surgery performed elsewhere.

The practicalities of the trip
Thailand is three hours behind eastern Australia for much of the year, seven ahead of London and twelve ahead of New York, which matters for arranging calls and for reply times once you are home.

Arrive a day early if you can. Being assessed and marked while tired and swollen from an overnight flight helps nobody, least of all on an operation planned in millimetres.
Do not attach a holiday to it
The temptation is obvious and this operation resists it more firmly than most.
Swimming waits until every wound is closed, sun on fresh scars can leave lasting darkening, and heat under a continuously worn garment is the thing the recovery least needs.
Add luggage, boats and unfamiliar bathrooms, and a beach week works against the operation at almost every point.

How long before I can lift my own luggage?
Longer than you will be in Thailand. Ask for a specific date and plan the journey home on the basis that you will not be lifting anything.
What if I am told to stay longer?
